Astarte Phoenician Goddess Silk Scarf

Hand-drawn by the artist Timi Hayek, this print portrays the goddess Astarte, who was the principal goddess of the Phoenicians at least 4,000 years ago. Also known as the deified morning and evening star, she represented sexuality, fertility, motherhood, and war. The “Queen of the Stars” was associated with the moon and called the Mother of the Universe, giver of all life on Earth. The deity later took on many names and forms among different cultures, such as Aphrodite/Venus in the Greco-Roman world. According to legend, Astarte descended to Earth as a fiery star, landing near Byblos in Afqa, Lebanon. Her temples along the coast of Beirut, Byblos, Tyre and Sidon were decorated with serpentine motifs, representing fertility and rebirth. As serpents shed their skin through sloughing, they symbolize new beginnings, transformation, immortality, and healing. Her association with owls and the moon is connected to the moon's cycles of renewal as well as wisdom, femininity, and fertility. A short description of Astarte is written on the tag of the scarf.
